How we calculate your numbers

Numerology is a set of traditions, not a science. Different sites follow different rules, which is why they sometimes disagree. Here are the exact rules NumHalo follows, so you can check every number yourself.

Two traditions

Western numerology (Hans Decoz) reduces your month, day and year separately, then adds them. Results are 1 to 9, 11, 22 or 33.

The Vietnamese Pythagorean school (David Phillips, popular in Vietnam through Lê Đỗ Quỳnh Hương) adds every digit of your birth date. Results are 2 to 11 and 22, so 10 is kept and 1 never appears.

Example: 9 February 1980 gives 2 in the Western method and 11 in the Vietnamese method. Both share the same root (2). The English site uses the Western method by default and the Vietnamese site uses the Vietnamese method. You can switch on your results page.

Your name

We use your full name at birth, including middle names. Accents are removed and Đ becomes D, so Nguyễn becomes NGUYEN. Apostrophes are dropped and hyphens split a name into two parts.

Each letter has a number from 1 to 9 (table below). Expression uses all letters, Soul Urge uses vowels, Personality uses consonants.

Vowels and the letter Y

A, E, I, O and U are vowels. Y is a vowel only when neither letter next to it is a vowel: Mỹ, Vy, Lynn, Kyle. Next to a vowel it is a consonant: Nguyễn, Huy, Thủy, Yolanda. W is always a consonant.

This follows David Phillips, Hans Decoz and most published guides. Some Vietnamese calculators count every Y as a vowel; you can turn that on in your results.

Reducing numbers and master numbers

We add digits until the number is small enough: 34 becomes 3 + 4 = 7. Master numbers 11 and 22 are kept. The Western method also keeps 33. The Vietnamese method keeps 10 and 11 and writes 22 as 22/4.

We keep every intermediate step, because karmic debt numbers (13, 14, 16 and 19) only appear along the way.

Birth chart and arrows

Every digit of your date of birth goes into a 3 by 3 grid: 3 6 9 on top, 2 5 8 in the middle, 1 4 7 at the bottom. Zeros are left out.

A full line of three numbers is an arrow of strength. A line with none of its three numbers is an empty arrow. There are 8 possible lines.

Your personal year

Your personal year adds your birth day, your birth month and the current year, reduced to 1 to 9. It changes on 1 January and follows a 9-year cycle.
