Birth date or due date

Meaning, sound and family tradition come first when you name a child, but many parents also like to know which numbers a name carries. The tool at the top of this page gives you name ideas from a last name and a birth date (or due date), or compares a few full names side by side. This guide explains how the numbers are calculated, how each name is scored, and walks through an example you can check by hand.

How a name turns into numbers

Pythagorean numerology gives every letter a number from 1 to 9 in alphabet order: A is 1, B is 2, up to I as 9, then it starts again with J as 1, K as 2, and so on until Z, which is 8. Accents are dropped, so "José" counts as "Jose".

Three core numbers come from the full name:

  • Expression: add every letter. It describes the abilities your child tends to show the world.
  • Soul Urge: add only the vowels. It describes what your child wants on the inside.
  • Personality: add only the consonants. It describes the first impression your child gives.

On the English site, NumHalo uses the Decoz method: each part of the name is reduced on its own (master numbers 11, 22 and 33 stay as they are), then the parts are added and reduced again. Y follows the position rule: it counts as a vowel only when neither letter next to it in the same word is A, E, I, O or U. In "Emily" the Y follows an L and ends the word, so it is a vowel.

Why parents compare a name with the Life Path

The Life Path comes from the birth date and can't be changed. The name can. So parents often pick a name whose numbers point the same way as the Life Path. In numerology, a person whose Life Path and Expression agree tends to find it easier to act like themselves.

The birth date tells you one more thing. The birth chart, a 3 x 3 grid holding the digits of the date, usually has a few empty squares. A name with letters carrying those missing digits is seen as filling the gaps.

How to choose a baby name with numerology: the 5 scoring criteria

Each full name is scored out of 100. To judge harmony, numerology sorts the numbers into three groups: the thinking group 1-5-7, the building group 2-4-8 and the creative group 3-6-9. Master numbers count by their root (11 is 2, 22 is 4, 33 is 6), and 10 counts as 1.

  • Expression in harmony with the Life Path (30 points): same number 30, same group 24, different group 12.
  • Soul Urge in harmony with the Life Path (20 points): same number 20, same group 16, different group 8.
  • Name fills digits missing from the birth chart (25 points): of the digits 1-9 absent from the birth date, the share the name supplies earns the same share of 25. A birth date with no missing digits gets the full 25.
  • Few Karmic Lessons (15 points): a Karmic Lesson is a digit from 1 to 9 that no letter in the name carries. Zero or one missing earns 15, two earn 10, three earn 5, four or more earn 0.
  • No Karmic Debt (10 points): if the Expression, Soul Urge or Personality passes through 13, 14, 16 or 19 on the way to its final number, the name loses these 10 points and the result says which number did it.

The first two criteria carry the most weight because they describe how well the name and birth date fit together. The last three are useful to know, not a reason to drop a name your family loves.

Worked example: Emily Rose Carter or Emily Jane Carter?

Say the baby is due on September 4, 2027.

Life Path: the month is 9, the day is 4, and the year is 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, a master number that stays. Then 9 + 4 + 11 = 24, and 2 + 4 = 6. The birth chart holds 9, 4, 2, 2 and 7 (zeros are skipped), so it is missing 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8.

Emily Rose Carter

  • EMILY = 5 + 4 + 9 + 3 + 7 = 28, then 10, then 1. ROSE = 9 + 6 + 1 + 5 = 21, then 3. CARTER = 3 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 29, then 11, which stays.
  • Expression: 1 + 3 + 11 = 15, then 6.
  • Soul Urge: EMILY's E, I, Y = 21, then 3. ROSE's O, E = 11, which stays. CARTER's A, E = 6. Then 3 + 11 + 6 = 20, then 2.
  • Personality: EMILY's M, L = 7. ROSE's R, S = 10, then 1. CARTER's C, R, T, R = 23, then 5. Then 7 + 1 + 5 = 13, then 4.

Score: Expression 6 matches the Life Path, 30. Soul Urge 2 is in the building group, a different group from 6, 8. Of the five missing digits, the name supplies 1 (S, A), 3 (L, C), 5 (E) and 6 (O) but not 8, so 4/5 of 25 is 20. The only Karmic Lesson is 8 (no H, Q or Z), 15. The Personality passes through 13, a Karmic Debt, 0. Total: 73/100.

Emily Jane Carter

JANE = 1 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 12, then 3, with vowels A, E = 6 and consonants J, N = 6. The Expression is 1 + 3 + 11 = 15, then 6 (30 points). The Soul Urge is 3 + 6 + 6 = 15, then 6 (20 points). The Personality is 7 + 6 + 5 = 18, then 9, with no Karmic Debt (10 points). The name supplies 1, 3 and 5 but not 6 or 8, so 3/5 of 25 is 15. The Karmic Lessons are 6 and 8, 10. Total: 85/100.

Changing only the middle name moved the score by 12 points. "Rose" fills more of the birth chart; "Jane" fits the Life Path more closely. The score shows the trade-off, not the right answer.

Practical tips for choosing a baby name

  • Meaning, sound and family wishes matter more than numbers. A name that is easy to say, fits the last name and carries something your family cares about is worth more than a few points.
  • Score the full name, middle name included, exactly as you plan to write it on the birth certificate.
  • Test 3 to 5 candidates in the comparison mode, then choose among the names your family already likes.
  • Read the reasons, not just the total. Two names with 80 points can be strong on different criteria.
  • Say the name out loud with the last name, and check the initials and likely nicknames.

Scores are a convention, not a prediction

The score out of 100 is a summary based on the conventions of Pythagorean numerology, meant to help you compare names quickly. It doesn't measure the future or decide how your child does in school or in life, and a name scoring 60 is not less lucky than one scoring 90. NumHalo never suggests renaming anyone to change their life. Treat the numbers as one more point of view next to the things only your family knows.

Everything is calculated in your browser; names and dates are not sent to our server. Once you've chosen, the Numerology for your child report includes a chapter on the name and birth date together.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the exact birth date to choose a name with numerology?

It helps, because the Life Path and birth chart both come from the date. Before the birth, use the due date as a guide and score your shortlist again once you know the real date, since arriving a few days early or late can change the Life Path. The Expression, Soul Urge and Personality depend only on the name, so they do not change.

Should I include the middle name?

Yes. Numerology uses the full birth name. As the example above shows, changing only the middle name can shift every number, so the tool always scores the complete name.

Should I drop a name with a low score?

No need. The score is a convention for comparing names, not a verdict on good or bad. If your family loves a name and it means what you want it to mean, it is still a good name. The reasons tell you where it is strong.

Is Karmic Debt in a name something to worry about?

No. Karmic Debt refers to the in-between numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19, which numerology links to a familiar lesson such as patience or using freedom well. It does not predict anything bad. The tool lowers the score so you know, and the choice stays with you.

Why do different calculators give different numbers for the same name?

Methods differ in how they treat the letter Y, whether they reduce each name separately and how they score. NumHalo tells you which method it uses and shows every step, so you can check each number.

Does it work for names from other languages?

Yes, as long as the name is written in Latin letters. Accents are removed before calculating. For names written in other scripts, use the spelling you plan to put on the birth certificate.

Is the baby name tool free?

Yes. The 30 name ideas and the comparison of up to 5 full names are free, with no sign-in. Your entries stay in your browser.
